India's NMPT achieves 100 per cent growth in container traffic

Shri P Tamilvanan, Chairman, NMPT expressed happiness over the performance of the Port in attracting container traffic through New Mangalore Port. For the 1st quarter of the Financial Year 2008-09, Port handled 7559 TEUs as against 3713 TEUs handled for the same period of last year which is 103% more. He has attributed the reasons for the increase to the infrastructure addition like adding of 2 Nos. of Container Handling Reach Stackers, increase in stack yard capacity, increase in reefer plug points, efficient handling by the Port workers and better planning by the Port Officers and staff.
He added that the increase in arrival of Mainline Vessels from East, and West African Countries to Mangalore Port with raw cashew containers , which were earlier transshipped mostly at Colombo Port, is a boon to the trade. He expressed happiness over the marketing efforts taken by the Port in highlighting the facilities available in NMPT and also the supportive role played by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce & Industries (KCCI) and Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FKCCI).
Shri Tamilvanan expressed his thanks to the Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce & Industries for felicitating and awarding NMPT as the Best Export Facilitation Organization in Export Excellence Award 2008(Silver) in the State. He stated that such recognition will be a motivation to the Port to increase its efficiency and provide more facilities to the trade. He appealed to the Trade to utilize New Mangalore Port for their import and export activities.
