California's eco tax on containers threatens Hawaii imports

Hawaii is set to suffer from the latest Californian shipping-container tax fee, with 80 per cent of its goods shipped in boxes that pass through Californian ports.
The tax levied at US$60 for every TEU leaving Long Beach, Los Angeles and Oakland is the latest environmental law to tackle west coat air pollution, reports Honolulu's Pacific Business News.
If the bill is passed by the Senate and Gov Arnold Schwarzenegger it will come in to effect in January 2009. Monies generated from tax fee will be fed into projects across Southern California that include installing cleaner-burning truck and train engines, and other clean-air solutions.
The impact of the bill is estimated to cost each person $50 said Chamber of Commerce Hawaii President Jim Tollefson, reported The Los Angeles Times.
