The world's largest cash buyer, US-based Global Marketing Systems (GMS), told Ocean Intelligence on Sunday that “a number of private container vessels were sold this week” to Indian breakers.
The US-built integrated tug and oil barge (ITB) New York was also sold for scrap in India.
Last week also saw Hong Kong Ming Wah Shipping sell its 1987-built aframax crude tanker, the 88,782 dwt New Argosy to Bangladeshi breakers.
The New Argosy is the second vessel to be sold from its fleet following the New Ambition which was also scrapped in Bangladesh several months ago.
Meanwhile, GMS highlighted that reports last week concerning the sale of the world's biggest ship to-date, the former ULCC Jahre Viking, now the converted FSO Knock Nevis, to an Asian oil storage operator could be false.
“Whilst owners insist she had been sold to oil traders (Malaysian) for storage purposes, it was something of a mystery to see the vessel being circulated in the Indian and Pakistani [ship-breaking] market by a few channels claiming it as their own,” said GMS.
GMS added that the market “remains high on speculation and rumour and low on specifics”.
