Two rescue vessels tow Ivan Makarin ship of Far East CSP after an accident near Nakhodka

Ivan Makarin MV, owned by FESCO, "Far East Shipping Company, heading for Vladivostok from Japan on January 21, 2010, got a malfunction of its systems (strong resonance transverse vibration). That occurred 90 miles southeast of the port of Nakhodka. The main engine was stopped. Specialists assumed the vessel had lost a removable four-blade propeller, leading to unbalance the moments of its rotation. The company decided to tow the ship by Kapitan Khlebnikov icebreaker that had been on its route from the Antarctic expedition, Vladivostok-bound from Pusan to Vladivostok, the company press service said.

Further check showed the screw blade was missing. Meanwhile, the ship was drifted 150 miles to the east. On January 24 another rescue ship (Irbis, of Far East ship-rescue department) was also sent from Vladivostok to help.

In the morning of Jan. 24 Kapitan the icebreaker began towing Ivan Makarin ship towards Vladivostok and in the morning of January 25 Irbis rescue ship had successfully joined 240 miles from Vladivostok, taking over the towing to bring the malfunctioning vessel to Vladivostok port by January 27. The icebreaker is due tomorrow at the port. Ivan Makarin MV will be docked at the port for repair, the company reported.
