Owned and built by the South Korean shipowner Hanjin Shipping and located in the Strait of Gibraltar, TTIA is the first semi-automatic container terminal both in the Mediterranean and Southern Europe.
It is the largest investment ever made by a South Korean company in Spain, according to a press release from the Port of Algeciras Bay Authority (APBA).
More than 500 attended the opening ceremony, including management from the most important shipowners, ports, and port and logistics operators in the sector.
Several speakers mentioned the importance of new technologies and how the modern new terminal will boost competitiveness for the Port of Algeciras in the face of developments at other ports.
The new terminal is located at the port's major extension project, the Isla Verde Exterior, which is also home to the King Juan Carlos I Quay, where APM Terminals currently operates the largest container terminal in the Mediterranean.
The construction of the terminal began in January 2009, and Hanjin has been able to complete the project in less than two years and bring forward the scheduled deadline for the operational start-up.
During May, the CKYH Alliance shipowner began regular port calls and, subsequently, UASC, X-Press, Boluda and Hapag - among others - followed suit.
The new terminal has already reached 47% total operational status and is expected to be fully operational from October onwards.
