Vostochny Port’s throughput soars by 86% to 23.54m tons in Jan-Aug.

Freight turnover at the Port of Vostochny (East) in January-August 2010 reached 23.54 million tons or a 86-percent surge, PortNews IAA reports citing the Vostochny Port Authority.

Eight-month volume of handled coal, coke, including charge and anthracite rose by 3.4% from the same period of 2009, to 11 million tons, transshipment of fertilizer increased by 19% to 638.900 tons, petroleum products rose by 4.5%, to 358,800 tons.

The port’s container traffic leaped nearly 50% to 153,913 TEUs. The major freight traffic volume was generated by the recently-launched oil terminal Spetsmornefteport Kozmino, managed by the Vostochny Port Authority.

Vostochny (East) Port is the largest Russian deep-sea port in the Far East. It is located on the shores of unfreezing Wrangel Bay of the Japan Sea near the village of Vostochny to the south of Primorsky Territory, 30 km east off Nakhodka. The annual port’s throughput exceeds 18 million tons of cargoes. There are 19 berths at the port (quay wall - 4.7km, depths ranging from 6.5 m to 16.5 m) operated by stevedoring companies. The port’s portfolio of assets includes one of the largest Russia's container terminal, a coal terminal and developed warehousing facilities. The Vostochny Port handles chemicals (fertilizers, methanol) and lumber. Its deep waters allow 150-dwt vessels to dock at the port. Last year, Vostochny Port’s throughput shrank by 8.14% from the 2008’s figures, to 18,941,100 tons.
