Nine-month Russian oil exports via Varandei terminal up 5.4%, to nearly 6m tons

Russian oil exports through the Terminal Varandey (Arkhangelsk region) in January-September 2010 rose by 5.4% from the same period last year, to 5.848 million tons of crude oil, PortNews reports citing the Authority of Port of Arkhangelsk. In September, the terminal handled 565,600 tons of oil, the report said.

In 2008, LUKOIL has completed the construction of the Varandey terminal for crude exports of annual capacity of 12m tons (240,000 bpd) of oil. Launched in June 2008 Varandey terminal started year-round crude oil transshipment. The oil is supplied to the terminal from the Timan-Pechora province, primarily in South- Khylchuyusky field, launched the same month of 2008.

The oil cargo is delivered by ice-class 70,000DWT shuttle tankers to a floating storage facility, located in the ice-free waters off Murmansk. Then, crude oil is transported by 150,000DWT ocean-going tankers to Western Europe and the USA.
