Port of Melbourne's cargo throughput up 13.2% to 78,8m tons
Freight traffic passing through the Port of Melbourne in 2010 rose by 13.2% year-over-year, to 78,8 million tons. This is a record volume handled by the port, the Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) press release said.
The total increase in trade flows was fueld by boosted container traffic reaching 2,348,000 TEUs, up 12.6% from a year earlier. In October, 2010 the port saw a record volume ever, 217,000 TEUs.
"The platform for the strong trade performance was set in the first half of the calendar year when container volumes grew at an average monthly rate of 15.8 percent during the six months from January to June - the strongest ever result for that period," the Port Authority said.
Handling of vehicles increased by 34.7% year-over-year to 398,000 units.
