Port Ventspils’ throughput down 12.5% to 4 million tons

Cargo volume moved at the port of Ventspils (Latvia) in January-February 2011 totaled 4,08 million tons, 12.5% down from last year’s figures, the Port Authority said.

In the reporting period, the stevedoring company Ventspils Nafta handled 1,775 tons of oil products, coal terminal throughput amounted to 327,000 tons. Ventbunkers terminal handled 419,000 tons of liquid bulk, Kalija parks transshipped 478,000 tons of cargo.

Free Port of Ventspils, located near the mouth of the Venta River, has terminals for transshipment of petroleum products, liquid chemicals, fertilizer, metals, timber and fish products, coal, containers and Ro-Ro trailers. In 2010, cargo throughput of the port shrank by 6.8% year-over-year to 24,81 million tons.
