Cargo volume handled at Ukraine-based Yuzhny Merchant Sea Port in January-May of 2011 jumped by 30.1% from the same period of 2010 and 14.6% up over planned figure, to 9,532,900 tons, the company’s press office reported.
In five recent months, the volume of transit cargoes surged 73.2% to 4,930,600 tons versus 2,846,000 tons a year earlier. During the period Yuzhny port handled 379 vessels and 76,962 rail cars. Bulk cargo and liquid bulk account for 82.7% and 17.3% respectively.
State-owned Yuzhny Merchant Sea Port (Ukraine) founded in 1978 is located on the northwest coast of the Black Sea, in the ice-free Small Adzhalyksk (Grygoryivsky) estuary, 30 km northeast of Odessa. The port is connected to the sea by a 3km-long, 14m-deep approach canal.
In 2009, the company posted a net income of UAH 557,882 million, gross income rose by 69.75% to UAH 2,552,37 million. In 2010, Yuzhny port’s cargo throughput was up 2.1% year-over-year to 18,22 million tons.
