Russian lawmakers adopt amendments to the Merchant Shipping Code
Russian State Duma has adopted several amendments to the Merchant Shipping Code of Russia (MSC), the Russian Shipping reports. The bill "On Amendments to the Merchant Shipping Code of the Russian Federation," June 3, 2011 was approved on third reading and sent to the Federation Council.
The amendments were made to several Articles of the Code in connection with ongoing administrative reform. The Federal Service for Transport Supervision will be authorized to oversight all merchant vessels operated in the country’s waters (except sport and pleasure boats), compliance with international treaties of the Russian Federation relating to the Merchant Shipping and the Russian Federation legislation on merchant shipping in regard to the fishing vessels, for safety of life at sea, for the certification of crew members of vessels engaged in fishing, etc.
In addition, the Code was supplemented with the chapter on liability for damage caused by bunker oil pollution.
The lawmakers also voted for the amendments to the Russian Code harmonizing the national laws and international norms and rules (Articles 23, 27, 326 and 359 of Merchant Shipping Code).
