New Port of Taman project gains pace

The site for construction of a new deepwater port of Taman (Temryuk District, Krasnodar region) can be determined by the end of July 2011, a Transport Ministry official said Friday.

"By the end of July, I think, we'll see the outlines of the future port," Russian Deputy Transport Minister Viktor Olersky told the Federal Agency of Maritime and River Transport.

The construction site will reportedly be located on the Black Sea coast from Cape Panageya to Tuzla Spit on the Taman Peninsula.

By the end of July, the first phase of the port infrastructure design will be completed, the official said.

Earlier reports said Rostransmodernizatsiya had selected a St. Petersburg-based design bureau among other bidders and awarded JSC Lenmorniiproekt the contract for the port design.

The new port will feature terminals for handling coal, grain, metal, container, and possibly fertilizer.

Some sources had named SUEK as one of the investors to build a coal terminal at the port of Taman.
