"We are seeing more cargo moving in containers pretty much everywhere in Africa - East Africa, South Africa and West Africa," he said on the sidelines of a Singapore industry conference. "Africa is strong for commodities."
Mr Knudsen said the Danish shipping giant has noted the more active trade with Africa has compensated for lower volumes on Asia-Europe routes as economic growth becomes sluggish in the developed world.
Maersk, France's CMA CGM, NYK Line, and other majors, have also introduced Africa-bound loops or added ships to existing ones this year.
While Maersk was happy with its performance in China, Mr Knudsen said: "What we have seen is business migrating from the southern part of China towards the east and north, so perhaps a change in sourcing patterns."
