Cargo volume moving through major ports in India surged 7 percent during April to June compared with a year earlier, according to preliminary traffic figures released by the Indian Ports Association, the Journal of Commerce reports.
The strong turnaround in the first three months of fiscal 2011-12 followed a mere 1.5 percent increase in throughput during the previous fiscal year that ended March 31.
The 13 state-owned ports handled 148.5 million tons of cargo during April-June, up from 139 million tons in the year-ago period.
The latest IPA data indicates the ports of Kandla, Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva) and Visakhapatnam posted impressive gains in overall traffic movements.
Major hubs that suffered marginal declines in tonnage included Mumbai, Chennai and Mormugao.
Kandla emerged as the top cargo handler with throughput of 21 million tons, followed by Visakhapatnam, at 18.6 million tons; Nehru, at 18.4 million tons; Chennai, at 15 million tons; Paradip, at 14.6 million tons; and Mumbai, at 13.6 million tons.
Overall tonnage in June jumped 10 percent to 49 million tons from 44.4 million tons in the same month last year.
For fiscal 2010-11, India’s ocean trade via major ports increased to 570 million tons from 561 million a year earlier, but fell short of the Shipping Ministry’s target of 600 million tons. Container traffic climbed 9.5 percent to 7.54 million 20-foot equivalent units from 6.89 million TEUs.
According to government estimates, major ports are expected to handle 615 million tons of cargo in fiscal 2011-12 with containerized cargo volume projected to surpass 10 million TEUs.
