APM Terminals Rotterdam barges in to help customers out

APM Terminals Rotterdam is allowing customers to drop cargo at an inland barge hub for transfer to its deepsea container terminal to avoid congestion caused by road works, ifw-net reports.

APMT said it was expecting heavy congestion on the A15 serving the Rotterdam port area until 2015 because of extensive roadworks on the highway which links the terminal with interior European commercial, industrial and population centres.

To mitigate the delays, APMT customers are able to deliver their Rotterdam cargo at the Moerdijk depot, from where a barge shuttle service will operate between there and the APMT Rotterdam facility.

Rob Sponselee, APM Terminals Rotterdam Operations Director, said: “We are pleased to offer this new service to our customers to help avoid unnecessary delays, and to also promote environmentally sound alternatives to road transport.”

The container transhipment service will receive preferential treatment at both terminals, including priority scheduling, while costs can be potentially reduced, as storage prices at Moerdijk are lower than at Maasvlakte.

It will also be possible to deliver containers to the depot more than eight days ahead of cut-off times.
