Hamburg Sud will cut one of the services it operates between North Europe and the eastern Mediterranean in another sign of weakening trading conditions on one of the Asia-Europe trade lanes, Journal of Commerce reports.The Hamburg-based container lines said Wednesday it will end one of its two strings to the eastern Mediterranean the first week in August and reconfigure the remaining string to cover the same key ports it now services. Hamburg will team up with Seago Line to fill in the gaps.
Hamburg Sud will withdraw the Northern Route Service (NEMN) between North Europe and Turkey and adjust the Southern Route Levante Service (NESM) to include key ports from the Northern Route Service.
The German carrier’s announcement comes a week after CSAV said it’s suspending its Mare Nostrum service between Asia and the Mediterranean because of sharply declining rates on Asia-Europe trade lanes.
Hamburg Sud’s revised weekly NESM service will deploy vessels of the same capacities as the previous two services in the range of 2,500 to 2,700 20-foot equivalent units. It will have the following rotation: Felixstowe, Antwerp, Hamburg, Tangiers, Alexandria, Limassol, Beirut, Latakia, Mersin, Izmir, Alexandria, Salerno and back to Felixstowe.
The service will also feature dedicated connections to Tunisia, Algeria and Western Med ports from Tangiers.
Hamburg Sud said it will also will team up with Seago Line, the new feeder line operated by Maersk Line, to provide two further weekly strings (the Turkey and Israel Slings), which, when combined with its new NESM Service, will provide the same level of services.
The Turkey Sling calls at the following ports: Felixstowe, Bremerhaven, Antwerp, Piraeus, Istanbul Ambarli, Izmit Korfezi, Gemlik, Izmir, Valencia and back to Felixstowe.
The port rotation of the Israel Sling is: Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Haifa, Ashdod and back to Felixstowe.
