Singapore has on Monday opened its third Port Operations Control Centre (POCC) that will enhance the navigational safety and protection of the marine environment in Singapore port waters and the Singapore Strait, Seatrade Asia online reports. The state-of-the-art Vessel Traffic Information System (VTIS) at POCC in Changi will eventually replace an existing POCC at Tanjong Pagar Complex.
The new VTIS at POCC-Changi has the ability to handle up to 10,000 vessel tracks at any one time, twice the capacity of the existing VTIS.
The S$25.4m ($21m) facility is able to extract information from various sources like radars, Automatic Identification System (AIS), Harbour Craft Transponder System (HARTS), CCTV and ship databases to present a comprehensive sea situation picture to the local port authority's Vessel Traffic Management (VTM) operators on high-resolution display.
The existing POCC at PSA Vista will be undergoing upgrading to incorporate the same new technology used at POCC-Changi.
