Hamburg Sud will stop providing chassis for merchant haulage in and around the Port of Oakland as of Sept. 15, making it the third port where it's getting out of the chassis business, and its first on the West Coast, Journal of Commerce reports. The German carrier said Monday that shippers and their trucking companies will need to procure chassis to dray their containers to and from inland locations directly from chassis-leasing companies or neutral chassis pools.
Hamburg Sud said it will continue to provide chassis for shippers with contracts under which it has agreed to provide intermodal moves.
Hamburg Sud and its subsidiary Alianca previously stopped providing chassis in Baltimore as of May 1 and Philadelphia as of Feb. 1.
