German inland port of Bonn to invest 450,000 TEU

By the end of this year, the German inland port of Bonn will have expanded its container handling capacity to some 450,000 TEU, Portofrotterdam reports. In this way the terminal prepares itself for the expected rise in throughput in the seaports. This year the terminal will clearly handle more than 180,000 TEU, the level of the pre-crisis year 2008. In 2010, throughput amounted to 178,000 TEU.
Presently, the terminal area for combined transport is extended with two hectares to 8,3 hectares. This will bring the stacking capacity for loaded containers to 2,340 TEU. A new container bridge crane is already in operation since autumn. Total investments amount to 12.5 million euro.
