Tacoma container traffic down 11 percent in June

The volume of containers handled by the Port of Tacoma dropped by 11 percent in June compared to the same month a year ago, reflecting the sluggish trends in the U.S. retail and housing industries, the port said, Journal of Commerce reports. The port 130,838 20-foot-equivalent units handled in June, with imports down 22 percent and exports up 9.9 percent.
For the year-to date through June, breakbulk tonnage was up 61 percent year-over-year and auto import unit handling rose 26 percent. The port’s total cargo tonnage was up 11 percent.
Container handling in the first six months of 2011 increased by 2 percent year-over-year to 720,278 TEUS, largely due to the growth in export containers.
For the year through June, loaded export container volumes through the port remained strong, with year-over-year volume up 14 percent, while full import container volumes dropped 4 percent.
