NYK and Yusen Terminals receive 2011 Clean Air Action Plan Awards from the Port of Los Angeles

NYK and Yusen Terminals Inc. (YTI) are the proud recipients of 2011 Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) awards1 from the Port of Los Angeles. NYK was recognized for its “significant early action to reduce air pollutant emissions” through its early compliance with California Air Pollution Control laws. In 2010, NYK containerships were able to reduce nitrous oxide and particulate matter emissions by 24%2 through the use of shoreside electric power3 while at berth, 4-traders reports.

YTI, a wholly owned subsidiary of NYK, was recognized with its third CAAP award, this one for its “innovative operations that improve air quality.” YTI demonstrates its commitment to the environment through efficient operations that include automated gates and restructured traffic flow patterns. In 2008, YTI was presented a CAAP award for its use of “innovative air quality improvement technologies,” and the company was a recipient again in 2009 for its “air quality improvement leadership at the corporate level.”

Hideki Tanabe, vice president of NYK Line (North America) Ltd., and Patrick Burgoyne, president of YTI, attended the July 26 awards ceremony.

Since being the first company to be supplied with shoreside electric power from the port of Los Angeles in November 2007, NYK has strove to reduce its impact on the environment, and the NYK Group will continue its efforts to create a sustainable society through activities related to conservation of the global environment and the development of environmental technologies.

1 The CAAP Air Quality Awards Program is an annual program that permits the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles the opportunity to acknowledge achievements of port tenants and operators who demonstrate a strong commitment to improving air quality at facilities within the ports. There are four awards: Air Quality Improvement Leadership at the Corporate Level, Innovative Air Quality Improvement Technologies, Innovative Operations that Improve Air Quality, and Significant Early Action to Reduce Air Pollutant Emissions.
