Zhongshan port to build river-sea shipping large distribution centre

SOUTH China's Zhongshan port will build into a river-sea collection and distribution centres focusing on light and medium load shipping by 2015, reports Xinhua.

Half of Zhongshan city's export container cargo is transshipped abroad via Guangzhou's Nansha port, Shenzhen-Yantian port or via Hong Kong by road. As busy terminals in Pearl River Delta are dominated by five to 10 berths, vessels less than 10,000 tons must suffer long waits outside port. The ship schedule and logistics efficiency is thus badly affected.

West Pearl River Delta and the upper reaches of the Pearl are areas under-developed with huge potential market, said Mr Feng, the vice mayor of Zhongshan. If we can take 10 per cent shipping market from these areas, 800,000 to 1.8 million TEU of cargo will flow into Zhongshan port, he added.

Zhongshan port will dredge its outer channel to 9.6 metres to accommodate 10,000-ton vessels. It will open direct services to southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea and ports in coastal China to add more outlets instead of the only one to Hong Kong. More cargo will be transshipped to Europe, Oceania and Africa via Singapore and cargo from the upper reach of Pearl River and costal China will be collected and distributed via sea-river shipment at Zhongshan port.
