ADM orders bulker trio order at Oshima
Grain giant Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) has confirmed it is ordering a trio 95,000 dwt bulkers from Oshima Shipbuilding in Japan, Seatrade Asia online reports. ADM’s ambitions to grow its shipowning arm were first exclusively reported by sister publication Seatrade Asia Week in August with news that it was looking to order as many as 35 bulkers from the Japanese yard.
The all-Japanese orders have been placed by ADM with Sumitomo Corp, and will be classed by ClassNK and built at Oshima Shipbuilding. Green technology onboard the vessels by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries allowing the vessels to achieve a 25% reduction CO2 emissions.
“Adding three new oceangoing vessels to our global transportation network supports our strategy to increase the volume of crops we handle and expand the geographic footprint of our operations worldwide,” said Royce Wilken, an officer of ADM Transportation. “It also provides greater flexibility and control of our supply chain while improving our transportation margins.”
The new bulkers will increase ADM’s fleet to 11 bulkers ranging from handysize to panamax.
