Maersk Line starts operations in Bolivar Port

A ship from the Danish shipping company "Maerks Line" arrived last Saturday at the main pier of Bolívar Port, to start shipping operations of banana tree containers destined to the United States and some European countries, Mundomaritimo reports.
Wilmer Encalada, manager for the Port Authority in Bolívar Port (APPB), pointed out that it's about an agreement with the multinational to widen market opportunities: "We have a good fruit production in the South area of Ecuador".
The company operates from the ports of Guayaquil and Esmeraldas and will arrive at Bolívar port every Saturday to ship banana containers. Directors of APPB said that it's an advantage for banana producers in El Oro.
"The transportation costs by land of a container to Machala to Guayaquil is above US$300, but now they only have to move it to the pier in Bolívar Port and that has a cost under US$100", pointed Encalada.
Since the previous week, changes were made in the piers, packing houses, cold chambers and other places, in order to receive the shipping company. On Saturday 150 empty containers were unloaded and the load of another 80 containers with boxes of banana, destined to Europe and Mediterranean area. William Loayza, shipping agent, affirmed that banana producers are happy with what they consider to be an achievement.
