Once a LME hub, Kaohsiung Harbor will access two million metric tons of transshipped goods per year, benefiting shipping firms and warehouse operators who will tap the harbor’s direct shipping to China’s major harbors.
Currently the world’s premier non-ferrous metals market to offer futures and options contracts for non-ferrous, minor metals and steel, the LME has 37 delivery harbors worldwide as in Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea. Kaohsiung Harbor is the first in Greater China to apply to become a LME hub.
A senior officer of the Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau said Kaohsiung Harbor will pass final review to become an LME hub in the beginning of 2012.
Seeing the promising prospects of the Kaohsiung Harbor, warehousing operators as Singapore’s NEMS, GKE, Henry Bath and Italy’s Pacorini are showing great interest to invest in Taiwan.
Kaoshiung Harbor Bureau said it has reserved 50 hectares for the special LME warehousing zone to facilitate investments from home and abroad.
For instance, Yangming Marine Transport Corp., a leading shipper in Taiwan, will rent 36 hectares adjacent to the sixth container center of the Kaohsiung Harbor to build a logistics center.
