CONCOR to start services from Madurai to Karaikal, Delhi
The Container Corporation of India is to start container train services from the inland container depot here to Karaikal port and Delhi "at the earliest," a top official said here, Moneycontrol reports.
K Raveen Kumar Reddy, Chief General Manager, Concor, told reporters here yesterday that the CONCOR was ready to operate service from Tondiarpet in Chennai to Karaikal and from Madurai to Karaikal and Delhi.
The inland container depot here was handling both export and import cargo at a competitive tariff, he said. Reddy was on a visit to the inland container depot at Koodal Nagar here.
Daniel Jothi Kumar, Assistant General Manager of Marg Karaikal port, claimed as Karaikal port was centrally located, goods could be imported and exported from there at a cheaper cost. He said containers were being sent to Colombo on a large scale.
A seperate handling facility had been given for the goods sent from Karaikal Port, and this reduced time and saved money, he said. Reddy further added that the Koodal Nagar inland container deport would become the nodal point for five districts including Madurai, Dindigul, Karur, Theni and Namakkal. With the Madurai Airport set to soon operate international flights, the CONCOR would also set up aircargo complex here, he said.
The CONCOR handled 2.06 lakh TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent units) in the current fiscal upto November, compared to 1.65 TEUs in 2010-11, Reddy said. The CONCOR, rated as the number one logistic company in the country, was driven by volume, not profit, he added.
