Riga Port’s traffic volume grows 25.8 percent to 3.39 million tons

Cargo throughput at Free Port of Riga in January 2012 rose 25.8% from a year ago, to 3.39 million tons, the Port Authority said.

In the reporting period, shipments of coal increased by 39.6% to 1.31 million tons, the volume of oil products grew by 17.9% to 899,900 tons, of ore - by 27.6% to 93,900 tons, transshipment of scrap metal was up 2.8% to 55,000 tons.

In January, shipments of wood pellets soared by 51% to 118,800 tons, handling of timber cargo fell 4% to 208,100 tons, of chemicals - by 22.1% to 107,100 tons. of building materials dropped by 60% to 1,800 tons.

Container throughput increased by 34.7% to 27,683 TEUs. Passenger traffic increased by 14.8% to 64,533 people. Cruise vessels carried 3,342 passengers, down 20.7% from a year earlier.
