Shipments of crude oil and petroleum products fell 6.9 percent to 662,300 tons, handling of steel products declined by 12% to 140,900 tons, the monthly volume of other types of cargo dropped by 78.7% to 22,000 tons, grain exports soared by 4.7 times to 52,300 tons. Ferry traffic volumes leaped by more than twofold to 162,400 tons. The number of calls in January 2012 was up 10.8% (184 vessels), from the 2011’s figure.
The Republican State Enterprise "Aktau International Sea Commercial Port” (Port of Aktau), located on the east coast of the Caspian Sea, is the premier port of Kazakhstan. The port is a gateway for international trade flows passing through the country. The Aktau port’s terminals handle a broad range of dry cargoes, crude oil and petroleum products. In 2011, cargo throughput at Aktau Port was 12,1 million tons.
