Odessa Port dry bulk volume jumps 23.3 percent
Shipments of dry bulk cargo through Odessa Commercial Sea Port (OCSP) in January-April 2012 totaled 5.9 million tons, a 23.3-percent spike from the same period a year before, the company said.
The growth in the cargo segment was driven primarily by grain exports, which rose by 1.5 mln tons to 2.03 million tons and ferrous metals volume, which soared by 223,700 tons to 1.5 million tons.
In the first quarter of 2012 the port saw a 25-percent decline in oil products traffic, including Russian oil products transshipment, which slumped by 54%. In April, the downward trend in the segment continued with 387,500 tons less from the monthly figure of 2011.
Overall, total cargo throughput in Jan-Apr 2012 was 9.02 mln tons, including 2.3 mln tons handled in April.
State-owned Odessa Commercial Sea Port is a largest port in the Black Sea-Azov basin. The port encompasses 14 ha, featuring 9km-long quay line with 54 berths. The port’s passenger terminal can accommodate 300m-long vessels. Port of Odessa capacity is 14 million tons of dry bulk cargo and the same volume of oil products a year. In 2011, cargo traffic rose 3.7% year-on-year, to 25 mln tons. Container througput was up 29% to 453,700 TEUs.
