Strike shuts Gateway Terminal India
Private container terminal Gateway Terminal India has shut operations at its Navi Mumbai facility after a strike by employees, leading to congestion at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trustand diversion of traffic to the Pipavav Port in Gujarat.
"Some of the traffic is now moving to Pipavav Port (in Gujarat) while some are coming to JNPT and there is a congestion trouble," said a senior official from JNPT, reported The Economic Times.
JNPT, which handles more than 55 percent of the country's container cargo, has three terminals at its facility.
JNPT operates one container terminal, while DP World and APM Terminals operate the other two.
JNPT's own container terminal is operating at more than 120 percent capacity and extra cargo from Gateway Terminal has led to congestion.
Employees of Gateway Terminal, which is operated by APM Terminals, have been protesting against the company's decision to hire 11 "outsiders".
Local employees say people from their group can fill the new positions, the JNPT official said.
APM Terminals has intimated its customers that movement of trailers and vessel operations have been hit.
