Murmansk Port cargo volumes up 10.1 percent
Handling of exports / imports at Murmansk Commercial Sea Port (JSC MCSP) in January-August 2012 increased by 10.1% compared to the same period in 2011, to 10,395,000 tons, the stevedoring company statistics said.
In the reporting period coal export rose 7.8%, shipments of iron-ore concentrate leaped by nearly 66%, from 659,000 tons a year ago to 1,093,000 tons.
In August, cargo throughput rose by 24% to 1,484,000 tons.
The eight-month volume increase was driven primarily by coal exports: shipments of the commodity soared by 44%, boosting its share in the port’s throughout from 69% to 80%. There was an increase in other export cargoes, namely apatite concentrate, scrap metal, as well as coastal traffic of ISO ‘20 and ISO ’40 containers.
In the reporting period, the port handled 52 vessels and 20,131 railcars. Average daily rate was 650 units.
OJSC Murmansk Commercial Seaport was founded in 1994. MCS operates 17 berths of total length of about 3 km. The waters depths allow the port to accommodate vessels with draft of 15.5 m and length of more than 265 m. The stevedore specializes in handling ranged cargoes, including non-ferrous metals and alloys in packages, rolled ferrous metals, coal, apatite concentrate, alumina, and scrap and iron ore pellets in bulk, chemical products in bags and big-bags, construction cargo and foodstuff.
