Russia may have new ice-free port in Kaliningrad region
The new deep-water port project in the Kaliningrad region is the responsibility of the federal government, but its construction is beneficial not only for the region, but for Russia as a whole, a local official said.
Speaking to PortNews on the sidelines of 4th Baltic Transport Forum Alexander Rolbinov, Minister of Infrastructure Development of the Kaliningrad region said that the main advantage of such port would be its favorable geographic location and non-freezing harbor.
"The last two navigation seasons showed that Port of Ust-Luga freezes, requires icebreakers assistance, which leads to additional costs. We have here a very convenient geographical location, a very short transport leg," said the official.
The Russian Transportation Ministry plans to explore the possibility of building a deep water port in the Kaliningrad region before the end of September.
