Port of Helsinki passenger traffic tops record 1.1 million
Cruise traffic in Port of Helsinki was busy in August as well. There were 1.1 million passengers. Compared with last year, this represents an increase of 2%. From January to August, the passenger total rose to 7.4 million passengers, which is a 4% increase over the previous year, the Helsinki port's press release said.
However, the increase in passenger traffic to Tallinn remained the most significant. The largest relative increase was in traffic to St. Petersburg, whose passenger total surpassed the previous year’s level by 64%.
The development of cargo traffic in the Port of Helsinki reflects Finland’s quiet financial situation. In August, the amount of unitised cargo was 800,000 tonnes, which is 7% less than a year ago. Import decreased 11% and export by 3%.
From January to August, the amount of unitised cargo was 6.6 million tonnes, which is 3% less than a year ago. Imports amounted to 3.5 million tonnes and exports to 3.2 million tonnes. Both import and export decreased by 3% from last year.
