Marine energy management company Marorka has launched a new tool that lets shipowners measure the effectiveness of energy-saving hull and propeller efficiency measures for the reduction of fuel costs and control of emissions, Ship & Bunker reports.
The new tool, part of the Marorka Online energy-management dashboard, is the product of a partnership with coating company Jotun and uses the company's performance measurement method.
The tool uses inputs including log speed, shaft power, draft, and sea depth to build reports that demonstrate the impact of hull or propeller improvements.
"There is an increasing body of evidence as to the fuel-cost and GHG-emissions saving potential related to improvements in hull and propeller performance," said Marorka's director of sales and marketing, Kristinn Aspelund.
"Enabling reliable measurements of hull and propeller performance through Marorka Online is an important step in our continuous efforts to help the shipping industry become more energy efficient, more sustainable and more competitive."
Jotun has added Marorka Online to its list of pre-qualified performance monitoring solutions, which means shipowers will be able to use the tool in evaluating the effectiveness of its products.
"Performance-based contracts are a cornerstone of our Hull Performance Solutions [HPS] and the measurement methodology and data used to determine the outcome of such contracts must be available to both parties," said Geir Axel Oftedahl, Director of Business Development at Jotun HPS.
As high bunker prices push more shipowners to look for fuel-savings solutions, some companies are calling for universal, independent ways of measuring such products' performance.
