Odessa Port ten-month cargo volumes up 3 percent

Cargo throughput at Odessa Commercial Sea Port in January-October 2012 fell 3% year-on-year, to 20,482,000 tons, the state-owned company said.

Shipments of dry bulk cargo totaled for the period 14,823,000 tons, a 16-percent gain from the last year’s figures. The growth was driven primarily by grain exports – 4,833,000 tons, a more than threefold spike. Ferrous metal volume doubled, up to 3,028,000 tons. Container throughput climbed 1.1% to 4,398,000 tons.

Since transshipment of transit light oil from Kazakhstan and fuel oil (Kazakhstan and Russia) had been shifted to the Russian ports, the commodity handling at berths of oil port of Odessa in January -October dropped 32.8% to 5,479,000 tons, the report says.

State-owned Odessa Commercial Sea Port is a largest port in the Black Sea-Azov basin. The port encompasses 14 ha, 9-km waterfront and 54 berths. The port’s passenger terminal can accommodate 300-m vessels. Port of Odessa is able to handle annually 14 million tons of dry bulk cargo and the same volume of oil products. In 2011, total cargo throughput at the port of Odessa rose 3.7% year-on-year, to 25 mln tons. Container traffic was up 29% to 453,700 TEUs.State-owned Odessa Commercial Sea Port is a largest port of the Black Sea-Azov basin.
