President Vladimir Putin has dismissed Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, who is expected to be replaced by former Emergency Situations Minister Sergey Shoygu, who serves as governor of the Moscow Region since May 2012, RBC reports.
Serdyukov was appointed Minister of Defense in February 2007, and was expected to deal with financial scandals related to the ministry. He has been in charge of implementing a major military reform since October 2008.
His dismissal is viewed as a follow-up to a recent scandal involving fraudulent sales of real estate assets by Oboronservice, a company which controls a number of enterprises working for the Russian defense industry.
