Cargo traffic at the Lithuanian Port of Klaipeda in January-October 2012 dropped 5.7% year-over-year to 36.067 million tons, the Port Authority said.
Shipments of liquid bulk fell 8.6% to 15,312,000 tons, handling of dry bulk cargo decreased by 4.8%, to 11,614,000 tons, general cargo volumes were down 1.6% to 9,140,000 tons.
In the reporting period, passenger traffic at the Port of Klaipeda rose 7.1% to 97,303 people with 5,974 ship calls (+0.5%).
Shipments of Ro-Ro-cargoes reached 4,075 tons (-0.3%). Container traffic for the ten-month period fell 3.1% to 314,486 TEUs.
State-owned Port of Klaipeda, the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, is the largest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea and inland traffic lanes. There are 17 stevedore companies, shipyards and other operators at the port, providing a broad range of services. In 2011, Port of Klaipeda cargo throughput rose 36 million tons from 31.27m tons a year before.
