Five dead, one hurt in LPG carrier gas leak

Five sailors were killed and one injured by a gas leak on a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier owned by Varun Shipping (Varun) of India Monday, The India Express reports.

The India flagged MV Maharshi Krishnatreya was headed toward Dubai for dry docking after discharging cargo in Mangalor, and the six crew members, including the chief officer, a gas engineer, and a bosun were trying to repair a damaged pipe in the compressor room when they were overcome with gas, the Directorate General of Shipping told the media in a statement.

The Indian Navy responded to a distress call and airlifted the injured sailor to Porbandar for medical help. A company official declined to comment specifically on the cause of the accident, citing pending investigations. The vessel had a total crew of 20.
