New York area ports returning to normal

New York-area port operations are returning to normal after storms from Hurricane Sandy hit the region late last month, Ship & Bunker reports.

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey reports that its container terminals are open for business and all terminals are returning to normal hours.

The Port Authority said the Newark Container Terminal and Global Terminal in Jersey City reopened on Monday, and Port Elizabeth was up by last Friday, but shipping company APL Limited (APL) noted delays in air, rail, and road transportation continuing through the week.

"Hurricane Sandy continues to cause disruptions and delays in air, rail, and road transportation and is expected to continue to have an impact in the coming week," APL said in a statement Thursday.

"The snow and rain currently hitting the affected regions are anticipated to hamper recovery efforts."

Bunker operations in the New York-New Jersey area were suspended on October 30 after terminals were left without power, with the area's electrical company calling it the largest storm-related outage in its history.
