BV classes world's largest containership

Conformity assessment and certification service Bureau Veritas (BV) said Wednesday it classed the world's largest containership by box volume, the new CGM Marco Polo operated by CMA-CGM of France, saying the vessel has features that reduce energy use and emissions by 2 to 4 percent.

CGM Marco Polo, which is 396 meters long and 54 meters wide with a draft of 16 meters, features environmental technology including an electronically controlled engine that can reduce fuel consumption 3 percent on average and drop the use of lub oil by a quarter, it said.

A twisted leading edge rudder improves hydrodynamics to reduce energy use and carbon dioxide emissions, and a pre-swirl stator that helps align water flow upstream from the propeller for optimal productivity.

The CGM Marco Polo also features an exhaust gas bypass system that can reduce fuel consumption by 1.5 percent at low speeds by improving energy efficiency, as well as an optimised hull design for better propulsion.

BV's calculations take into account whipping and springing, and provide insight into the vessel's actual response at sea.

The ship, which was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea, began its maiden voyage from Ningbo, China last week.
