Port of Genoa plans capability adjustments

A new masterplan is being created for the Port of Genoa in a bid to meet the needs of the new generation of larger container ships, Port Of Strategy
reports.
The Port of Genoa has held a workshop to discuss solutions for overcoming marine and land based limitations as part of the Port Integration project Multimodal Innovation for Sustainable Maritime & Hinterland Transport Structures.
The three year €1.47m project is based on new ships up to 22,000 teu capacity and will focus on two key transport operations: EDI Maritime Transport and Port Interfaces and Hinterland Transport, Gateways and Innovative Logistical Concepts.
Marco Sanguineri, Genoa Port Authority’s planning and development director was at the workshop to stress the need for quick decisions and public funding to help make Genoa’s port facilities more efficient and capable of handling larger container ships.
The workshop highlighted how major developments including deeper water, longer quay lengths, a larger turning circle and 2.5 km of breakwater, are crucial if the port is to maintain its position as a gateway to southern Europe. To address road congestion issues and lack of terminal space, the proportion of containers moved by rail is also set to increase.
The Port of Genoa hopes its location at the end of the EU’s TEN-T designated Corridor 24 from Rotterdam will help to secure European funds for expansion works.
A string of IT related proposals designed to speed the flow of information and cargo through the port are also under way.
