Yamal Port of Sabetta to become a multipurpose hub

There might be possibilities for future expansion of the seaport of Sabetta being constructed in the framework of Yamal LNG project to make it a multipurpose port, President Vladimir Putting said a meeting with Novatek Board’s Chairman Leonid Michelson.

"I’ve recently discussed this issue with Gazprom and I think that the future port capacities could be extended, bearing in mind that it could be a multipurpose port," the Kremlin press service quoted Vladimir Putin as saying.

Putin has authorized Leonid Michelson to finalize the issue with his colleagues and the Ministry of Transportation.

The port project is implemented in line with the Comprehensive Plan approved by the Russian government for the development of liquefied natural gas production on the Yamal Peninsula.

The Port of Sabetta will contribute to strengthening Russia position as a world leader in the development of the Arctic. Its creation will form the conditions necessary for the exploration and development of rich oil and gas deposits on the Yamal Peninsula and the Gulf of Ob, ensure year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route and the development of the icebreaker fleet of Russia.

Construction of the port is carried out on the principles of public-private partnership. The state will be responsible for dredging, construction of a canal and the Vessel Traffic Management and Information Systems. JSC Yamal LNG (the main shareholder of Novatek) will construct surface facilities of port infrastructure.
