Grounded boxship refloated safely at Prince Rupert Harbor

Shortly before 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 21st, the container vessel Hanjin Geneva -- which had run aground at the entrance to Prince Rupert harbour -- was moved successfully into deep water, proceeding under its own power to berth at Fairview Container Terminal, Prince Rupert Port Authority news release said.

Tugs assisted the vessel's movement from the sandy bank where it had run aground late Tuesday evening.

Once berthed at the Fairview Container Terminal, the Hanjin Geneva will undergo an examination. There are still no indications of any damage to the vessel. There were no injuries to any of the personnel on board.

Once the ship's master has determined that the vessel is safe and secure, cargo discharge operations are anticipated to proceed without any further delays.

An earlier report said that at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20th, the container vessel Hanjin Geneva ran aground trying to avoid a fishing vessel when entering Prince Rupert harbour. The Port Authority's Port Security Operations Centre (PSOC) became aware of the situation immediately and began working with port partners to assess the condition of the Geneva and its crew.
