Viking orders two more new cruise ships from Fincantieri
Viking Ocean Cruises, a Viking River Cruises subsidiary, has signed an agreement with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for the construction of two passenger vessels with an option for two more, in addition to two cruise ships ordered in July 2012 from the Italian shipbuilding group. Fincantieri has said that the new contract will be concluded when all the technical and financia conditions are defined.
The new ships of 48,000 GRT will be the twin of the two units already ordered this year in line with the Viking's strategy of approach to cruising business.
Fincantieri has announced that the agreement also includes a series of joint initiatives for the study of LNG propulsion.
"This additional order - said the chairman of Viking, Torstein Hagen - is a testament to how strong was the interest aroused by our concept of travelling on aboard small ships... We are very excited to have Fincantieri as a partner..."
"We are very pleased to enhance our collaboration with Viking and this new agreement demonstrates our ability to compete in the market," said CEO of Fincantieri Giuseppe Bono.
