Krishnapatnam Port eyes handling of rolling cargo
The Krishnapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh plans to compete with the neighbouring ports in handling the export of cars manufactured in Chennai and Bengaluru regions, Daily Shipping Times reports.
The Port, located 180 kilometer (km) north of Chennai, is currently in the process of constructing a roll-on roll-off (RoRo) berth at its south terminal.
"We already have the basic infrastructure in place, which can be customized as per the wishes of the clients. We are in talks with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) for shipping cars from our facility and hope to have the berth ready to handle cars by the first quarter of 2013-14," said Mr. Anil Yendluri,
Chief Executive Officer of Krishnapatnam Port and Director of the Krishnapatnam Rail Company Limited.
Mr. Yendluri added that the Port was holding discussions with all car manufacturers.
At present, Hyundai, Ford, Nissan and Renault have production plants located in the Chennai region.
The Port is accessible via rail and road and has nearly 45 km of rail line within its area.
Further, Mr. Yendluri claimed that Krishnapatnam being a private port had the added advantage of flexibility in rates for the trade.
Krishnapatnam Port, one of the most advanced and largest ports in India, is strategically located in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. It is set to boost trade in the vast hinterland comprising Andhra Pradesh, eastern Karnataka, south-eastern Maharashtra and northern Tamil Nadu, and also be the central hub for international cargo between the countries located on the eastern hemisphere and India.
Nearly USD 1 billion has been invested in the port till date, meeting global standards in providing world class services and facilities.
In its quest towards excellence, Krishnapatnam Port Container Terminal (KPCT), a world class, all-weather, 1.2-million Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) capacity container terminals at Krishnapatnam Port, had recently commissioned five Super Post-Panamax Rail-Mounted Quay Cranes (RMQC) at the facility.
