Vyborg Shipyard lays keel of second 16MW icebreaker of Project 21900M
Vyborg Shipyard (VSZ) on December 12 2012 held a keel-laying ceremony for the second vessel in a package of three icebreakers of capacity of 16 MW of Project 21900M, Rosmorrechflot press release said. The vessels will be operated by Rosmorport. Technical project was developed by CDB BaltSudoProekt - FSUE State Scientific Center Krylovskiy.
United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) and Vyborg Shipyard (VSZ) on February 23, 2012 signed contracts for 16MW diesel-powered icebreakers of Project 21900M. The total contract value is about 8 billion rubles. The first serial icebreaker of Project 21900M was laid down at the shipyard on October 17.
The 21900M project icebreaker, a double-decked vessel of unlimited navigation area, has a helipad and is equipped with twin controllable-pitch screws, twin rudders and bow thruster.
"Icebreakers of Project 21900M have unlimited navigation area. They are designed to escort large tonnage vessels, for towing vessels and other floating facilities in ice and open water, for fire fighting, to perform works assisting stricken vessels," said deputy head of CDB Baltsudoproekt Gennady Muranov.
Ship’s general characteristics: displacement - about 10,000 tons, length overall - 116 m, breadth - 26.5 m. The icebreaker will be able to cut channels through ice of up to 1.5 meters in thickness. The ships will be utilized for escort of large-tonnage cargo vessels, towing, fire fighting on floating structures and other facilities, for salvage of stricken ships and transportation of cargo. The series icebreakers are also intended for transportation of containers on the upper deck, including reefer containers. Two newbuilds are scheduled for delivery in May and October 2015. The 21900M project vessels will be operating in the Baltic.
