Rolls-Royce gets £100mln order for offshore drilling vessel systems
Rolls-Royce says it has received an order worth more than £100 million ($161 million) to supply power and propulsion systems for seven offshore drilling vessels to be owned by Brazilian oil company Petrobras, Ship & Bunker reports.
The ships, being built at the Atlântico Sul shipyard in Brazil, will move between drill sites along Brazil's Atlantic coast, extracting oil from wells 2,000 to 3,000 meters below the surface.
"We are delighted to announce this significant order in Brazil for our new customer, Atlântico Sul," said Rolls-Royce Marine President Tony Wood.
"This contract builds further on our strong reputation for innovation and technology, and on our market-leading position for power and propulsion systems in the offshore drilling sector." Each ship will be equipped with six large thrusters and six Bergen diesel generator sets.
In October, Rolls-Royce announced a £24 million ($38.6 million) deal with Brazilian ship owner Bravante Group to design and equip for platform supply vessels (PSVs) for use on offshore oil and gas platforms off the nation's coast.
Rolls-Royce said the new order is part of a relationship with Brazil that also includes a new facility for assembling and testing industrial gas turbines that the company plans to open in 2013 in Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro.
The company said the first batch of equipment from the new facility has already been ordered by Petrobras in a $650 million contract signed in 2011.
