Baltic Dry Index down to just 700 points
With just one day of trading left in 2012 the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) closed at just 700 points on Friday, Seatrade Asia online reports. Lacklustre trade ahead of the holiday season brought the BDI down another eight points, or 1.13% to 700 points having fallen consistently since 29 November when it stood at 1,097 points.
The index’s final day of trading for the year is today, 24 December. The BDI averaged just 923 in the year up to 20 December well below breakeven for most vessel owners. The index hit a 26-year low in early February of just 647 points.
