Container transshipment through Baltic ports falls

The Klaipeda Port Management web-site reports that during January and Febuary container trans-shipments through the seaport of Klaipeda (Lithuania) fell by 29.1% in comparison to the same period in 2008 down to 41,250TEU. Yet this port remains the leader amongst Baltic Ports for container movements: the reductions of container traffic through ports in nearby countries was even greater.

In the Port of Riga (Latvia) container trans-shipment fell by 14.4 % to 28,400 TEU; in Tallinn (Estonia) the fall was 12.1 % to 23,200 TEU. and in the Port of Ventspils (Latvia) container trans-shipment fell by more than 90% in January in comparison to the previous years figure: down to a mere 60 TEU. In February this port did not have any container trans-shipment at all.

Among Baltic ports the largest total loading volumes in January-February were registered in Ventspils, - 5.21 million tons (a decrease of 4 % on same period of the previous year).

Second was Riga, where the transshipment volume fell by 6.7% to 5 million tons. In third place was Tallinn with 4.7 million tons (a decrease of 7.2% ) and Klaipeda was the fourth with 4.3 million tons ( a decrease of 14.5%).
