RS stand - the best exposition of IMDS 2013

On Sunday, 7 July, the work of VI International Maritime Defence Show (IMDS 2013) was brought to a conclusion. Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS, the Register) which took part in the work of the show for the first time this year is summing up the results, evaluating the prospects of further cooperation with the national Navy and planning for future participation in similar fora.

Summing up the RS participation in IMDS 2013, Mikhail Ayvazov, RS Chief Executive Officer noted: ‘Solving the tasks which the defence industry complex of our country is now facing requires for state-of-the-art technologies to be developed in naval design, construction and operation of naval ships. In the current situation, RS, as a body having accumulated contemporary scientific achievements, long-term practice of supporting the construction and operation projects for ships of different type and purpose as well as the international know-how of maritime safety standard development, is ready for fruitful cooperation with the widest circle of industry organizations and companies’.

RS exposition presented services of life cycle support for naval ships and supply vessels, materials and equipment manufacture supervision, production process survey and management system certification for enterprises participating in the Government Defence Procurement procedures and for organizations engaged in research, development, production, delivery, maintenance, operation, repair and disposal of military equipment and defence products. Successful negotiations were conducted with a number of potential clients and partners of RS. RS experts have taken part in conferences and round tables organized within the framework of IMDS 2013.

By the end of the show RS was awarded with a laureate diploma for the best exposition and a commemorative of VI International Maritime Defence Show.

Maritime show has become a St. Petersburg virtual tradition, which, in the opinion of Dmitry Rogozin, Deputy Head of RF Government, who addressed the forum, is worth carrying on and developing. Having noted that at present the RF Government has approved several programs connected not only with the development of naval weapons, but of civil maritime technologies as well, including those for exploring the Arctic region, Dmitry Rogozin suggested that the shows be held annually, alternating naval ones with civil shipbuilding shows. RS sees good prospects for itself and is planning to actively participate in maritime shows for the future.

Today, 5192 sea-going ships are classed with RS and 127 ships are under construction with a total gross tonnage of about 990 000. The geography of ship construction to RS class covers the yards of Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, China, Finland, South Korea, Croatia, Serbia, Vietnam and Azerbaijan.

As a national classification society whose operating history on the classification market goes back to almost a century, RS has everything required for technical supervision of ships of any degree of complexity. Classed with RS are high-technology ice ships and nuclear icebreakers, RS requirements are developed on a serious scientific basis with due regard for all applicable international standards. RS involvement in the classification and technical supervision of naval ships, auxiliary and training fleet of the Russian Navy will enable the application of innovative solutions of the global shipbuilding as well as statutory requirements to maritime safety and environment protection for their design.

At the conference ‘The Navy and Shipbuilding Nowadays 2013’ which was held on 4 July within the framework of the International Maritime Show, RS declared its readiness to consider the prospects for elaborating rules for Navy ships. The development of relevant specialized rules by RS will help unify the design bureaus’ approach to this work.
